The teen accused of hitting a Lowell boy and then driving off will face additional charges, according to Lowell police.
Michelle Medeiros, 17, of Methuen is accused of hitting 12-year-old Kelvin Savanhmixay of Lowell as he was walking home from school earlier this month.
Medeiros has already been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after personal injury.
Lowell police announced on Thursday Medeiros will face four additional charges in connection to the accident: negligent operation of a motor vehicle, passing a vehicle stopped for a pedestrian, failure to use caution when changing lanes and operating at a speed greater than reasonable and proper.
Police say Medeiros was drag racing in an Acura at the time of the accident and sped off after hitting Savanhmixay, who was knocked 15 to 20 feet in the air.
Lowell Police say they recovered the Acura Medeiros was driving at Best Auto Body in Methuen.
Medeiros told police she didn't realize what she had hit. "She heard something and she saw something hit her windshield," said Lowell police Lt. Timothy Crowley.
Police say Medeiros drove away.
The second car in the race stopped briefly. The driver, described as a white man with dark hair, spoke to a witness before speeding off. Police say they are still looking for that driver.
Medeiros told police she was not racing.
Medeiros was not arrested because leaving the scene of a "personal injury accident" is just a misdemeanor. It's only a felony when the victim dies.
Her license has been revoked.
