One week after being hit by a car, a young Lowell boy was back home for Thanksgiving. Despite still recovering from painful injuries, Kelvin Savanhmixay proved he still has his sense of humor.
Last week the 12-year-old was
hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk, and thrown twenty feet. The force of the impact was so severe that Kelvin needed reconstructive surgery on his face.
From his bed Thursday, Kelvin talked a bit, though through his still-swollen face, some words were difficult to understand.
When asked what he wanted people at home to know, he quickly quipped, "look both ways when you cross the street," eliciting a chuckle in the room.
Kelvin said he was grateful to be home for Thanksgiving, though he wasn't able to eat any solid food. The Lowell seventh grader has three metal plates under the skin of his face.
He suffered his injuries on November 18, when police say a car driven by 17-year-old Michelle Medeiros of Methuen hit him in a crosswalk and took off. Police say she was street racing, and
faces multiple driving offenses.
"What this girl did to my son, I just hope the laws really tighten up and has justice on my side, at least for my son," said Kelvin's mother, Dao Savanhmixay.
This is one Thanksgiving the Savanhmixay family will never forget. "I thought he was never going to come back home to me," Dao said. "After what we've been through, at least he's home with the family."
