Three Lynn police officers are being called heroes for rescuing four people from a burning house Tuesday night.
Flames erupted on the back porch of a Clinton Street home around 9:30 p.m. and quickly spread to the rest of the building.
Listen: The 911 Call
Officers David Galeazzi, Thomas Hazard and John Marr were the first to respond to the scene.
Four people were trapped inside.
"They could hear screams coming from inside the dwelling. The three officers forced in the front door," said Lynn police Lt. William Sharpe.
CLIMBING OVER JUNK
But reaching the victims was not easy because of household clutter and debris.
The officers had to climb over junk in order to get in and out of the house.
An eyewitness recalled police trying to get through the debris.
"They were trying to get through the front door," said Joanna Rosario.
"They were throwing things out, tossing things, things were breaking."
EVERYONE SAVED
All four victims were rescued.
A 57-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
The police officers were transported to Salem Hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and released.
The officers are veterans of the force. The Lynn Police Department is praising their actions.
"Obviously, they are commended for their heroic act by our department." said Lt. Sharpe.
"They went above and beyond the range of duty we typically encounter."
'PUT THEIR LIVES AT RISK'
Rosario watched the officers make the rescue while the house burned.
"They deserve a lot of credit. They put their lives at risk last night, seriously."
The cause of the fire is not known, but investigators said it does not appear to be arson.
