Amid talk of Manny Ramirez being traded, the Red Sox slugger says the team doesn't deserve him.
In an interview with ESPN.com Wednesday, Ramirez said, "The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me. During my years here I've seen how they have mistreated other great players.
"(They) did the same with guys Normar and Pedro, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy," Ramirez said. "I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price and I don't have peace here."
The Red Sox are in discussions with numerous teams about Ramirez, including the Florida Marlins and the Los Angeles Dodgers. ESPN's Peter Gammons said there may be a possibility of a three-team trade that would bring Pittsburgh's 29-year-old slugger, Jason Bay, to Boston with Ramirez going to the Marlins.
If it's a straight deal with Florida, ESPN's Jason Stark said the Red Sox could get either Jeremy Hermida or Josh Willingham and prospects.
Thursday marks the non-waiver trading deadline for the Red Sox. The team has until Nov. 9 to pick up a $20 million option for next year on Ramirez, who would have to approve any trade as a 10-year veteran with five years on the same team. They also have a $20 million option for 2010. Ramirez is in the final year of his guaranteed eight-year, $160 million contract.
Ramirez has said he doesn't think the Red Sox will trade him.
