The New England Patriots have named a coach accused of abusing a player as the team's "Coach of the Week."
Marblehead High School football coach Doug Chernovetz was honored by the Pats last week for leading the Magicians to their
first winning season since 1992.
The problem is the Patriots reportedly didn't know Chernovetz is facing a
civil complaint from a former player who claims the coach assaulted and intimidated him.
Timothy Morris left the team in 2007 after playing eight games.
Chernovetz's attorney, Samuel Perkins, told the
Boston Globe his client is the victim of a "smear campaign" intended to get him fired.
Patriots spokesman Stacey James told the paper they didn't know anything about the lawsuit.
"The award doesn't come with that type of detailed vetting," said James. "It's more looking at the performance of the team and the coaching staff in overcoming obstacles or celebrating big wins or upsets."
James said they will take a closer look at nominated coaches in the future.
