DA: Guard 'Acted Lawfully' In MGH Shooting

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The security guard who shot and killed a psychiatric patient inside a biopolar clinic earlier this week acted lawfully, said Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley during an afternoon press conference.

Paul Langone, of Reading, shot 37-year-old Jay Carciero as Carciero stabbed Dr. Astride Desrosiers several times Tuesday afternoon at her Staniford Street office.

"This investigation remains ongoing and active, but the evidence at the scene, Mr. Langone's statements to the police, and the accounts of multiple witnesses, all indicate that Mr. Langone acted lawfully when he discharged his firearm. There's strong evidence he saved the life of Dr. Desrosiers and perhaps the lives of several other people," said Conley.

Langone is a security guard licensed as a Special Officer by Boston Police. Special officers can carry weapons and make arrests, but he is privately employed rather than working for the city.

"There was one thing I was completely sure of... that my son would act properly from beginning to end, and would never use force unless it was absolutely necessary," said Langone's father, Paul.

The elder Langone also said that Carciero lunged at his son twice before he opened fire.

Jay Carciero's family released a statement on Thursday, saying that he was a gentle and caring person, and a devoted and loving father to his four children. The statement says what happened on Tuesday "remains unexplainable to us."

The family expressed its thoughts and prayers for the recovery of Dr. Astrid Desrosiers, who is in serious but stable condition. The family said it was establishing a trust fund for Carciero's children through the Stoneham Municipal Federal Credit Union.

Because Carciero and Langone both live in Reading, police officers investigated any possible connection or relationship between the two men. They did not find a link between the two men.

Conley refused to say why Langone was in the medical building at the time, except to say he was there for a legitimate reason.
