Driver Hit By Falling Concrete On Mass Pike
ALLSTON (WBZ) ―
A woman was hurt on the Massachusetts Turnpike Monday morning when concrete fell from an overpass and hit her car.
It happened on the eastbound side of the Pike at the Cambridge Street overpass near the Allston-Brighton tolls.
"I was just driving like anybody else... I went underneath the bridge and chunk after chunk fell on my windshield," says Meg Garvey.
A piece of concrete crashed right through the car's sunroof.
"My son, thankfully wasn't with me because his car seat is completely covered in glass," says Meg.
Garvey was treated for cuts on her arm at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center where she met another person injured by falling concrete.
"The person is the next bay, two nights ago under the same exact bridge, his windshield was shattered," says Garvey.
Mass Highway is installing planks underneath the bridge to prevent any more debris from hitting traffic.
Engineers also checked the bridge's structural integrity.
