It could soon be the end of the road for some toll collectors on the Mass. Pike.
Almost half of the turnpike's 204 toll booths are still manually operated.
On Tuesday, the new executive director of the Pike, Alan Lebovidge, told board members the only way to cut costs is to reduce the head count.
In the coming months, four more toll booths will be converted to the Fast Lane system without layoffs. But after that toll takers will be let go.
"This is a very small first step. How far we go will be determined over the next couple of months," Lebovidge said. "If the analysis says we should close some manual tolls and become electronic then, yes, they will (lose their jobs)."
According to officials, for every four lanes converted to the Fast Lane system, the state saves $500,000 a year.
