Pike Toll Collectors Plead Not Guilty To Theft

BOSTON (WBZ) ― 10 current and former Massachusetts Turnpike Authority toll collectors pleaded not guilty Friday to charges they miscounted and misclassified vehicles to steal a total of $7,500 from the turnpike.

All were arraigned in Boston Municipal Court and released. None of them would speak to reporters. The workers are charged with larceny and fraudulent record keeping.

A seven-month investigation showed that some toll workers charged taxi cabs and other commercial vehicles as ordinary ones and pocketed the difference. The workers are supposed to use a switch to indicate what type of vehicle is passing.

In another scheme, workers are accused of manipulating a timing switch to allow two cars to pass for one. The workers are suspected of charging for two vehicles and stealing the money from the second.

Investigations began in October 2007 when the new administration at the Turnpike Authority uncovered evidence of the alleged scheme.

Authorities sought charges against the suspects after extensive surveillance at the toll plazas of the William F. Callahan and Ted Williams Tunnels and a review of financial and accounting records unearthed evidence of crimial activity.
