So how much are tolls going up on the Massachusetts Turnpike?
Executive Director Alan LeBovidge presented his recommendations to the Turnpike's board Friday and they approved them by a 4-to-1 vote.
Here are the recommendations:
Weston-128 Tolls: $2 for cars paying cash (currently $1.25)
$1.50 for cars using Fast Lane (currently $1)
$1 per axle for commercial vehicles
Allston-Brighton Tolls:
$2 for cars paying cash (currently $1.25)
$1.50 for cars using Fast Lane (currently $1)
$1 per axle for commercial vehicles
The Ted Williams and Sumner Tunnels: $7 for cars paying cash (currently $3.50)
$6 for cars using Fast Lane (currently $3)
$9 for 2-axle for commercial vehicles (currently $5.25)
$3.50 per axle for all other commercial vehicles
The bottom line here is it will be cheaper if you have a Fast Lane transponder.

There are no increases proposed for tolls west of Route 128, which would eventually be eliminated under Gov. Deval Patrick's plan. The border tolls at Stockbridge (New York border) and Sturbridge (Connecticut) would stay.
The next step will be public hearings, which will likely begin in December.
If that process goes smoothly, and technology at the tolls is updated to reflect the new rates, the earliest the increase would go into effect would be March 2009.
How to Avoid Tolls:If you have the time and the patience, there are routes to avoid the tolls.
Take a look at
Google Maps, then click on "Get Directions", then click "Show Options" and choose "Avoid Tolls." From there, enter your start and finish points.
Some GPS units also have an 'avoid tolls' routing feature.
