Turnpike Rest Area May Get Wind Turbine
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The state wants to put a wind turbine near a rest area on the Massachusetts Turnpike.
The secretaries of Transportation and Energy and Environmental Affairs announced Tuesday they are requesting proposals to build the turbine nearĀ
the Blandford Rest Area in western Massachusetts.
A UMass study found the 68-acre site, which has the highest elevation on the Turnpike, can support a 1.5 megawatt turbine.
They claim that would be enough to bring power to about 400 homes.
The wind turbine's output would be sold to the Western Massachusetts Electric Co. or another retail electricity provider.
The turbine would be the first along the Turnpike.
Proposals for the project are due June 30.
The project would be subject to local zoning and environmental regulations.
