Pike Debates Huge Toll Hikes

STURBRIDGE (AP) ― The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority is considering steep toll hikes as way to raise money to pay Big Dig debt and interest, and for infrastructure upgrades.

Among the proposals floated at Thursday's board meeting was one that would raise tunnel tolls by $5 from $3.50 to $8.50; one to raise tolls at Allston-Brighton by $1 to $2.25; and one to reinstate tolls for passenger cars on the westernmost portions of the highway. Those were eliminated in 1997.

Although board members said they did not want to raise tolls, most agreed that hikes were inevitable. No final decisions were made.

Turnpike Executive Director Alan LeBovidge and state Secretary of Transportation Bernard Cohen held out hope that the authority can avoid toll increases by getting more financial help from the state.
