Mass. Experiencing Doctor Shortage

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Massachusetts – known for being home to some of the best hospitals in the world – is dealing with a shortage of doctors.

A new study conducted by the Massachusetts Medical Society found that for the first time there are not enough oncologists, neurologists and dermatologists in the Commonwealth. Nine other medical specialties are experiencing shortages in some way.

The shortages are blamed on an increased patient demand. Under the state's new mandatory health insurance law, coverage has expanded to people a record number of people.

The study also lists physician recruitment and retention as a serious problem in Massachusetts, especially for community hospitals.
