Angry Protesters Seek Alternatives To Toll Hike
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Hundreds are expected to protest the proposed toll increase. Organizers scheduled the rally for Wednesday in East Boston.
Also Wednesday there was a hearing at the State House to look into an alternative to a toll increase: privatizing the transpiration system. Experts on public private partnerships testified before the joint transportation committee.
Chairman Senator Steven Baddour stated, "There are no easy solutions to the problems we face in our transportation system. I'm not sure we're able to tax, toll or reform out way out of the problem we're in."
Referring to public private partnerships, he said, "I'm not sure this is the answer or the solution to our problems, but it deserves debate, it deserves to be looked at fully, openly and in a transparent way."
This is the first time since the Mass Turnpike Authority voted to increase tolls that there is a public and legislative response to the plan.
The Turnpike Authority will hold public hearings, starting next Wednesday.
