MBTA Manager: Schedules Secretly Cut To Lower Cost
BOSTON (AP) ―
The head of the MBTA says for years the agency secretly cut bus and train trips from the schedule to lower costs.
The practice left customers waiting for rides that either arrived late or not at all.
T General Manager Daniel Grabauskas told the Boston Herald that customers were lied to so the agency could claim to operate at a level of service it wasn't delivering.
He said that has changed since he was hired in May 2005, and that service was improving.
Grabauskas said he decided to talk about the secret cuts because of a need for more truth in the agency's budgeting.
Grabauskas's disclosure comes at a time of trouble for the T, which is facing a $75 million dollar deficit in the next fiscal year.
