Box Car Collides With Commuter Train In Canton

CANTON (WBZ) ― Several people were injured after a single box car collided with a commuter train in Canton Tuesday evening.

The accident happened on the MBTA's Stoughton line just outside Canton Junction.

According to MBTA officials, the CSX freight car -- filled with construction materials -- rolled onto the main line and hit the train, which was traveling outbound toward Stoughton.

The car had rolled two miles from its resting place at a nearby lumber yard. A CSX spokesman says the frieght car had been placed at a customer's location earlier that day.

Officials say the engineer stopped the commuter train after spotting the approaching box car.

Out of the 300 people on board, 150 of them were injured in the crash, according to the Canton Fire Department. Eighty of those people had to be transported to area hospitals.

According to WBZ's Eileen Curran, 16 people were taken to Milton Hospital where they are listed in fair condition. One victim spoke about the frightening ordeal.

"It felt like an earthquake, you know? The whole car started shaking. People were falling," described Karen Bell of Randolph, who was taken to Milton Hospital after the train crash.

"Everybody was afraid. Nobody knew what was going on."

"A man next to me had bumped his head pretty badly and was bleeding in the back of his head. There were people lying down in the aisles. It just was very frightening."

Bell was not seriously injured, but she stayed at the hospital with a fellow passenger until her family arrived.

Buses are now taking commuters between the Route 128 Station and the Sharon and Stoughton stations due to a medical emergency at Canton Junction Station.
