MBTA Reports Drop In Violent Crime
BOSTON (AP) ―
MBTA officials say violent crime on its property fell 11 percent during the first six months of 2008, but the number of thefts increased.
From January through June, there were 154 incidents of violent crime, compared with 174 incidents in the same period last year.
Larcenies jumped from 229 in the first six months of 2007 to 305 this year. Acting MBTA Transit Police Chief Paul MacMillan said some of the increase is due to the theft of popular cell phones and handheld devices, such as Sidekicks.
The statistics released Friday by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority also showed that more riders reported being touched inappropriately. Complaints climbed from 17 in the first six months of 2007 to 38 so far this year. The MBTA attributed the increase to a public awareness campaign.
