Money Help Coming For MBTA, Turnpike Authority
BOSTON (AP) ―
The Massachusetts Port Authority and the Massachusetts Highway Department are coming to the aid of the Turnpike Authority and the MBTA.
Following an emergency transportation summit on Monday, both agencies have agreed to provide money and services to the two fellow cash-strapped transportation providers.
Transportation Secretary Bernard Cohen says he expects the details to be finalized next week, but he envisions the Highway Department and Massport to provide financial help and for Massport, for example, to assume some Turnpike services at Logan International Airport.
The T and the Turnpike are facing operating deficits after piling up bond debt, in the Turnpike's case after the construction of the Big Dig.
