First the state, now the city.
A day after Gov. Deval Patrick announced $1 billion in budget cuts and the elimination of 1,000 state jobs, Boston Mayor Tom Menino ordered a hiring freeze Thursday.
Menino also wants city officials to begin a review of their spending, while they determine how the state cuts will affect their departments.
The city was hoping to get $219 million from the state for repairs, maintenance, and new construction. That is now in jeopardy.
It is unclear how much of that funding will be pulled.
