What's Next For Romney?

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Poor Mitt Romney?

Insert your own joke here, but seriously, no, there's no reason for sympathy for our former governor being passed over as the vice-presidential nominee.

For starters, it's not at all clear that being chosen by John McCain would have been a good career move for Romney. Yes, if you win, you're the vice president. (Downside: you have to live in Washington, D.C., and attend far too many funerals.) But he'd be the vice-president of a president who is not known for delegating authority and with whom he has a problematic personal relationship. Ask Al Gore how much fun that can be.

Plus, the next four years are not likely to be a milk run for whoever holds the office. Even if the number two slot in a McCain administration held the promise of being in the on-deck circle for, say, 2012, it's hardly a small dunk that you'd be running from a position of political strength.

Make no mistake, Romney wants to be president. This way, he can continue what he's been doing, criss-crossing the country raising money for and cultivating ties with Republicans, easing the suspicions of the right that plagued him during the primaries, building his political organization.

And if this year's GOP ticket falters, he might well emerge in a stronger position to take over as party leader than if he had been chosen by McCain.
