Hundreds attended a candlelight vigil in Boston Thursday night for the victims of the
Mumbai terrorist attacks.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino held the vigil at City Hall Plaza with the Massachusetts Asian-American Commission.
The vigil included spiritual readings from religious leaders of the Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Hindu faiths.
Organizers said it's crucial for the community to condemn the attacks, and the vigil is also emotional for those Bostonians with ties to India.
Officials said India suspects two senior leaders of a banned Pakistani militant group orchestrated the deadly Mumbai attacks that claimed the lives of nearly 200 people, including six Americans.
Dozens of people at the vigil lined up to sign a book of condolence for the people of Mumbai. There was much sadness at the gathering, but more than anything there was determination that a small group of gunmen will not win nor divide India, a country that celebrates multi-cultural unity.
On Thursday,
India airports were on high alert following new attack warnings. The British Broadcasting Corp. cited unconfirmed reports from airport officials as saying late Thursday that up to six gunmen had been shot and killed at New Delhi's international airport. But Indian officials told the AP there was a minor incident and no deaths.
