For the first time in 21 years, a great white shark has washed ashore in Massachusetts.
Lisa Capone, a spokesperson for the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), confirmed to WBZ Tuesday that a shark that turned up dead on a beach near Sheep Pond Road in Nantucket Monday was a great white.
The female shark was about 6-and-a-half feet long and a couple of years old, Capone said.
DMF will dissect it Wednesday to determine how the shark died.
Last week, a shark sighting was reported off South Beach on Martha's Vineyard, but could not be confirmed.
A second reported sighting turned out to be a hoax.
