Cause Of Great White Shark's Death A Mystery

NANTUCKET (WBZ) ― After performing a necropsy on a great white shark that washed up dead in Nantucket on Monday, marine biologists still do not know what killed it.

Officials with the Division of Marine Fisheries said biologists were not able to determine a cause of death after dissecting the shark on Wednesday. They said the female shark was healthy and was only a few years old.

Biologists hope further tests will determine the cause of the shark's death.

However, biologists determined the shark's stomach was empty at the time of its death.

The six and a half foot shark turned up on a beach near Sheep Pond Road in Nantucket.

Last week, a shark sighting was reported off South Beach on Martha's Vineyard, but could not be confirmed.

A second reported sighting turned out to be a hoax.
