National Grid Assures Customers System Is Safe

Explainer: How Natural Gas Gets Into Your Home

WALTHAM (WBZ) ― "National Grid System is safe, operating normally and no cause for concern."

Though National Grid's Nick Stavropoulos says he understands why customers would worry.

Since December, two people have been killed and one injured in gas explosions at homes in Scituate, Somerset and Gloucester.

And just this week in Manchester NH, a person was killed in a possible gas explosion. National Grid provided gas delivery to the homes in Gloucester and Manchester.

"We've seen an increase in odor calls, which is understandable given the incidents locally here recently," said Stavropoulos. He adds, National Grid encourages customers to call whenever they smell natural gas.

For example, neighbors on Scott Road in Peabody are getting a new 1,000 foot line after smelling gas in the air for weeks.

"Come home from work in the morning, smell it real strong. Leak over here, leak over there," said James Munroe.

Stavropoulos says National Grid spends about a million dollars every work day replacing gas infrastructure.

"The number of leaks occurring on our system are lower today per mile than ever because we've ramped up, continually replacing the infrastructure we have in place."
