For the first time, jurors heard accused killer Neil Entwistle's voice recorded during a two-hour phone conversation with State Police Sgt. Robert Manning conducted on January 23, 2006 -- the day after police found Rachel and Lillian Entwistle shot to death in the family's rented Hopkinton home.
Sgt. Manning reached Neil Entwistle in England at his parents' home in Worksop. Throughout the entire interview, Entwistle repeatedly denied killing his wife and baby.
"We have some bad news about your wife and daughter
"
Listen: Police Tell Entwistle His Family Is DeadThat's how the conversation between Entwistle and Sgt. Manning started. And from there, Entwistle was asked to explain his whereabouts, why he fled to England, and why he didn't call 911 when he allegedly found the bodies of his wife and infant daughter. "(I) went upstairs to see where they were and that's when I found them
I had to get out of the house."
As the phone call continued, Entwistle described to Sgt. Manning how he said he found Rachel and Lillian. "When I first looked, it just looked like they were asleep."
Listen: Entwistle Explains Finding His Wife And DaughterHe said he walked up to the bed and saw blood on Lillian's face and mouth. "When I saw Lilly, (she) was such a mess
What sticks in my mind is (Lillian's) whole mouth and nose were covered (in blood), almost like bubbles. It was obvious they weren't alive anymore."
Entwistle explained how he wanted to kill himself after allegedly finding his his wife and baby and how he flew to England to be with his family. "I haven't even cried yet," he told Manning over the phone.
"You haven't cried?" Manning asked.
"Not properly. I just don't have any tears. It's almost because I'm here (in England) and it's not real."
After a few more question, police asked Entwistle if anything happened at the house. "Are you wondering did I have anything to do with it? God no," he said.
"Are you sure?" Manning asked. "I am not saying you did anything, I'm asking you."
"No, no," Entwistle replied.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, because I couldn't do that. Why would I do that?"
Manning then continued to press Entwistle about why he didn't call police when he said he found Rachel and Lillian in bed. "When you find your wife and daughter like that, not only don't you call police, you don't call (Rachel's) mother, father or family or friends. Then say (you) grabbed a knife to be with them? But you've taken a lot of steps not to be with them."
"I'm scared," Entwistle answered. "I got the knife. (I) couldn't do it. I knew it would hurt."
Listen: Entwistle Denies Killing Family"You don't bother to see if they were still alive? You didn't call for help. I'm just asking, (is there) anything you can tell me over the phone to help me investigate what I'm investigating here?"
"I see what you're getting at," Entwistle replied. "I never even contemplated that
I don't know what to tell you."
Before Entwistle hung up, he told Manning he had a great relationship with Rachel, and that they picked to live in Hopkinton because the town did not have any crime.
The prosecution is expected to rest their case on Friday.
