David Coderre, 29, a father of four and a little league coach, faces serious charges -- two counts each of rape of a child and indecent assault and battery.
Police say the victim is a 14-year-old family friend, who Coderre allegedly assaulted at his house, when she was helping baby sit his four children.
Police say she came forward. "This is someone known to her and known to her family so it's a very strong case," said New Bedford Police Lt. Jeffrey Silva.
In fact, prosecutors say Coderre confessed when questioned by police.
And Silva says police have larger concerns, because they say Coderre is a boys and girls little league coach in New Bedford. "It's not uncommon after a disclosure is made for other people to come forward," said Silva, even though nothing improper has been alleged relative to Coderre's coaching activity.
Coderre's father reacted angrily to reporters outside court, defending his son.
Not guilty pleas were entered on Coderre's behalf. His attorney pointed out in court Coderre has no significant criminal history.
The judge set bail at $50,000, more than double the amount requested by prosecutors.
