Armor Saves Trooper In Deadly Drug Shootout
NEW BEDFORD (WBZ) ―
Body armor saved the life of a state police trooper during a shootout with a drug suspect Thursday morning.
State police officers were at 21 Shawmut Ave. in New Bedford around 6 a.m. to execute a search warrant for illegal narcotics, officials said.
When police announced their presence and started making their way through the doorway, they were met with a hail of gunfire. According to police, the suspect was shooting at the officers through a wall.
"I heard 12 shots," said Brenda Lagasse. "My cats freaked out, that's what got me up."
One of the officers was shot in the torso.
State police officers quickly returned fire. They shot and killed the unidentified man in the apartment.
The trooper who was struck by gunfire, didn't realize he was hit.
"He didn't know he was hit until he checked his equipment at a later time," said State Police Detective Lt. Steve O'Reilly.
Two illegal guns were found in the home during a search after the shooting.
"This was an incredible incident, precipitated by someone investigated for drug dealing, illegal firearms and possibly more," said Bristol County DA Sam Sutter.
A woman and special needs child were also in the home at the time of shooting. They were not hurt.
