More than 10,000 people showed up for a big job fair in Manchester, N.H. Thursday, backing up traffic for miles and quickly filling up a mall parking lot that served as a shuttle-bus pickup hub.
140 prospective employers were offering at least 1,100 full and part-time jobs.
The event started at 9:30 a.m. and a short time later the 3,000-car parking lot at the Mall of New Hampshire had no more room.
They expected 5,000 people, but more than 10,000 showed up.
By 12:30 p.m. organizers had to shut it down because they were overwhelmed by the turnout.
The job fair was sponsored by WMUR, the state of New Hampshire and Southern New Hampshire University, which hosted the event at its athletic complex.
"We have stopped the number of job seekers who can come to campus because of capacity," said SNHU spokesman Gregg Mazzola.
"It's a safety issue."
"(Turnout) runs the gamut, old, young, black, white. I don't think this economy has any gender barriers, age barriers, ethnic barriers."
