Trooper: LeBarre Taped Talks With Sex Chat Line

BRENTWOOD, N.H. (WBZ) ― Today the jury heard Sheila LaBarre's own voice – including a jailhouse call to her sister. On the tape, LaBarre told her sister Lynn Noojin that she felt ignored by her attorneys, and that she didn't like her cell mate. LaBarre told her sister, "I don't want to have to be provoked into have to hurting someone."

LaBarre's sister said she believed Sheila needed help for her mental illness, and when they discussed her insanity plea, she said , "I told her that was the best option so she could receive help for these demons that consumed her all her life."

LaBarre's sister admitted that she destroyed most of letters that Sheila sent to her from jail, to protect both Sheila and herself. She says she was afraid of their past childhood abuse going public. Noojin blames that childhood abuse on a number of LaBarre's problems, saying "if you have not been molested, I don't think you can understand what it does to you."

Jurors also learned more about LaBarre from a state police lieutenant who investigated the case. Lt. Charles West told jurors that police found more than 300 cassettes LaBarre recorded from 1990 to 2006. He says many of the tapes were LaBarre singing dark and violent songs, with graphic sexual overtone. Other recordings were of her violent conversations with Dr. Wilfred LaBarre, her deceased common law husband, as well as other boyfriends. Lt. West said one of the tapes Dr. LaBarre wanted to revoke the power of attorney he had given her.

Lt. West also described the hundreds of calls to sex chat lines. He said they were "very, very graphic," and that LaBarre was domineering and controlling, that she chastised men and told them that she could turn violent. On the calls, LaBarre called herself "the silver leopard", "black widow" "angel" and "desire". West said pedophilia and incest were common themes on the calls.

According to Lt. West, LaBarre also taped herself making complaints for a variety of issues, from calling a car dealership about a problem with her Mercedes to calling the attorney general's office because of a problem with a judge in a landlord dispute. In once case LaBarre received a refund on an airline ticket as well as a voucher. Lt. West said she would make up stories to boost her credibility in these calls, even saying she knew Al Gore and Oprah.

Next on the stand is the defense's psychiatrist.
