McCain Makes Pledge To Local Soldier's Family

BOSTON (WBZ) ― During his acceptance speech Thursday night at the Republican National Convention, John McCain made a pledge to the family of a New Hampshire soldier who was killed while fighting in Iraq.

"I fight for the family of Matthew Stanley of Wolfeboro, N.H. Matthew died serving our country in Iraq," McCain said. "I wear his bracelet and think of him everyday. I intend to honor their sacrifice by making sure the country their son loved so well and never returned to remains safe from its enemies."

McCain made the war in Iraq a central part of his speech, which is a top issue for many Americans in the presidential election.

Stanley was killed on Dec. 16, 2006 by a roadside bomb in Baghdad just days before his 23rd birthday.
