Standoff After Manchester Murder Ends In Suicide
MANCHESTER, N.H. (WBZ) ―
A Manchester woman was killed and her father was also shot inside her New Hampshire home Thursday afternoon. Police say the woman's husband pulled the trigger, and then held officers at bay for hours before taking his own life.
WHAT HAPPENED
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. at 233 Jewett Street, the home of Jonathan and Melissa Charbonneau.
According to neighbors, the couple was going through a divorce and Mrs. Charbonneau had recently taken a restraining order against her husband. When she came to the home Thursday to collect some belongings, the violence erupted.
Police say Jonathan Charbonneau shot and killed his wife and also shot her father, who suffered non-life threatening injuries.
S.W.A.T. teams surrounded the home for nearly seven hours, before storming the house and discovering Charbonneau dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
NEIGHBORS BARRICADED
Neighbors were kept inside their homes during the lengthy ordeal.
"There was yelling and then I heard shots," neighbor Victor Melo told WBZ by telephone before police allowed him to leave his home. "It just sounded like the guy was mad."
The standoff ended just before 9 p.m. when police announced that the suspect had shot himself inside the home.
Police said the couple's children were safe and were not inside the home during the violence.
SCHOOLS LOCKED DOWN
The shooting happened near a few schools during school hours, so officials decided to put them in lockdown to ensure students' safety.
The schools put in lockdown were the Hallsville School, Southside Middle School, Jewett Street School and Memorial High School. Students were finally dismissed around 4:30 p.m.
NEIGHBORHOOD VIOLENCE
This latest shooting has people living in the area concerned.
On Wednesday, a person was shot and killed only two streets away from today's incident.
