A former Miss New Hampshire who was on her way to be a judge in the annual Miss Stratham Fair pageant was killed in an automobile accident Friday morning on Interstate 93.
WMUR-TV reported that 42-year-old Deborah Jean Howard of Campton was driving south on I-93 in New Hampton at about 10:30 Friday morning when the rear bumper of her car was struck by another vehicle.
Howard lost control of her car and struck a tree in the median.
According to the Union Leader, Howard was Miss New Hampshire 1991.
When Howard failed to show up at the Stratham Fair yesterday, participants and fellow judges wondered where she was, according to the paper.
Police say excessive speed and rainy weather appear to have been factors.
Donald Thompson, 48, of Meredith, was identified as the driver of the second car.
Both drivers wore seat belts.
