Media Access To NH Murder Records Denied

MILFORD, N.H. (AP) ― A judge has denied a request from The Associated Press and other media outlets to make public police affidavits in the slaying of a New Hampshire woman and the attack on her 11-year-old daughter.

Milford District Court Judge Martha Crocker said Tuesday that releasing the information now could hurt the investigation.

She said the documents will be released when indictments are issued or on Jan. 3, whichever comes first.

Police say Kimberly Cates of Mont Vernon was killed with a machete on Oct. 4 after four young men picked a random home to burglarize.

The four have waived hearings to determine whether there is enough evidence to send the case to a grand jury.

In exchange, prosecutors shared some of the sealed records with defense lawyers.
