A New Hampshire sixth grader who survived a violent attack inside her home earlier this month, returned to school Thursday.
Jaimie Cates briefly visited with classmates at Mont Vernon Village School, just days after
her release from the hospital. Jaimie's mother, Kim Cates, was murdered in her bed on October 4; Jaimie was discovered in the driveway with her throat slashed.
The Cates family wrote a statement which was read to Jaimie's classmates Thursday, explaining her healing process and her plan to eventually return to school full time.
"Jaimie and her Dad, David, want to thank all of her friends, teachers and classmates for their support," the statement read. "The cards, DVD, posters and gifts have made the hospital stay and the return home much nicer.
"Jaimie is returning to school today and she wants you to know that she is getting better every day. Soon she will be 100%, but right now she is in a wheelchair as her foot and arm are healing. Her foot is in a cast and she can't stand on it. Her arm is in a brace and her cuts are healing, therefore we need to be very careful around her arm and foot.
"Jaimie and her Dad request that we don't ask her a lot of questions about what happened. Jaimie will talk with her friends and classmates as she feels comfortable. Jaimie and her Dad want you to know that they are proud that she goes to Mt Vernon Village School and are glad to be back home with friends.
"Beginning the week of October 26th, Jaimie will begin a transition back to classroom instruction, spending some part of the school day in school and receiving at-home educational support for the remainder of the time."
Four young men were arrested for killing Kim Cates and slashing Jaimie. Prosecutors said they picked the Cates family at random.
