40-Acre Burn To Protect Rare Butterfly In N.H.

View: Map Of Burn Area

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ― New Hampshire officials plan to set fire to about 40 acres in Concord to protect an endangered butterfly.

Forest ranger Bryan Nowell says the prescribed burn will prevent invasive plants for taking over the vegetation Karner blue butterflies need to survive.

The prescribed burn is scheduled to happen in areas in and near Concord's Municipal Airport grounds. Officials say the fire could take place anytime from Aug. 27 to late October.
