Storm Waters Flood Manchester PD Garage
MANCHESTER, N.H. (WBZ) ―
The Manchester Police Department suffered thousands of dollars worth of damage to their basement garage during
Tropical Storm Hanna over the weekend.
Flood waters caused the ramp leading to the garage to collapse. Manchester police said they had six feet of water in the garage after the storm. "It was a few feet of water down there," said Officer Peter Bartlet.
The flooding damaged cruisers, motorcycles, records, tools and other equipment, WBZ Radio reports. The building also lost power and is now running on a generator. "We're trying to put ourselves back together," Bartlet said.
According to the
Manchester Union Leader, the flooding at the police station caused at least $100,000 in damages.
Several homes, businesses and streets suffered flood damage because of the large amount of rain that fell in such a short time.
WBZ's Jim Smith reported over the weekend about two-and-a-half inches of rain fell in a 90-minute period, and some places even saw three inches of rain in that time span. "We've had an incredible amount of rain in a short time, and it's having a big impact," said Manchester's mayor, Frank Guinta.
The flooding came so quickly, firefighters had to use a boat to rescue seven to 10 people from cars that were submerged in water. The public works department in Manchester responded to more than 200 calls about flooding by early Sunday evening.
New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch was in Manchester to tour the damage left by Hanna. Guinta also toured the affected neighborhoods in the city as well.
