Hundreds Gather At Vigil For Mont Vernon Victims

MONT VENRON, N.H. (WBZ) ― More than 600 people turned out in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire for a candlelight vigil and procession in support of the Cates family.

42-year-old Kim Cates was murdered early Sunday morning, and her 11-year-old daughter Jaime seriously injured. Four local teenagers allegedly invaded their Trow Road home bent on robbing and killing, and choosing their victims randomly, say prosecutors.

"It hurts that someone could enter a home, and commit a crime so heinous for fun. It's sick," said resident Sheri Nevins who took part in the march from the town's grammar school where Jaime is a student, to the firehouse where prayers were said.

On a windy night they were determined to keep their single candles alight, including classmates of the young girl who are anxious for her return. "Having everyone together is better than being alone," said Ciarri Formby-Lavertu.

Another classmate, Sierra Byne sits next to Jaime and notices the empty chair each day. "I'm afraid to fall asleep because if I wake up I'll have to deal with the reality," said classmate Sierra Byrne.

Many who turned out didn't know the family, some were friends and acquaintances who admitted feeling uneasy for the first time in this rural town of 2300 residents.

"Everyone is trying to rationalize it. Were there signs, was there something we could have done differently," said Paul Lavertu. Some call it a loss of innocence in the town where many say they are now locking doors for safety.

Jaime Cates is still recovering from her serious injuries at a Boston hospital. Friends say no one has been allowed in to visit her.
