"I have a hard time believing that my son deliberately went there to kill."
James Marks is shocked his son, 18-year-old William Marks, was allegedly involved in a plot to rob a home and kill anyone who got in the way.
THE CHARGES
Marks, along with three other teens, Steven Spader, 17, Christopher Gribble, 19, and Quinn Glover, 17, are charged in connection with the horrific
murder of 42-year-old Kimberly Cates and the brutal attack of her 11-year-old daughter, Jamie, in their home on Trow Road in Mont Vernon, N.H. Sunday morning.
Spader and Gribble are charged with first-degree murder, in the death of Kimberly Cates; attempted murder, in connection with the attack on her daughter; and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
Marks and Glover are charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, and armed robbery.
Marks said his son is a good kid, but "got under the influence of some bad kids" and is now "paying the price for it."
SPADER SHOWED MARKS A KNIFE
James Marks said the group was at his home just hours before
Cates was killed, and that Spader had showed him a knife during that time. "I said, 'Get rid of it. You don't need any hassles. Leave it at home. Don't drive around with it, because if you get pulled over, if it's illegal, you're in trouble.'"
It is unclear if the knife Marks saw was the one used in the murder.
SON IS 'ASHAMED'
William in now refusing to see his dad. "He said he's too ashamed at what had happened to see me, and I believe that."
Marks said he remembers his son coming home at 4:30 a.m. after staying out most of the night. According to Marks, William was perfectly calm and did nothing to hint that something had happened.
Marks insists that his son is not a violent kid.
SPADER WAS 'BAD NEWS'
WBZ's Ken MacLeod spoke to Mike Lynch, who went to school and was in Boy Scouts with two of the teens. He said Spader was bad news, but Gribble alleged involvement is a shock. "Gribble
I don't know where any of this came from. He didn't seem like the type at all."
All four were arraigned separately on Tuesday.
