Portsmouth police are asking witnesses to a man's severe beating Friday night to come forward.
Two Navy sailors have been arrested in connection with the 48-year-old man's beating. Police say the man was badly beaten and left lying in the middle of Chapel Street. He suffered a skull fracture and is in intensive care at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Police were able to identify and arrest two Navy sailors suspected in the assault, 23-year-old Sandy Portobanco and 22-year-old Gerald Smith.
Police say Smith was driving a Navy van with Portobanco as his passenger when the victim made a comment to the sailors that they took offense to.
Smith stopped the van and the two suspects beat the victim until he was unconscious in the roadway, police say.
Due to the severity of the beating, both sailors were charged with first-degree assault. They are also accused of threatening a witness to silence and have been charged with witness tampering.
Police believe there were other witnesses to the brutal beating and urge them to come forward. Anyone who was in the area of Bow and Chapel streets just before midnight are asked to call Det. John Peracchi at 603-610-7432 or Det. Lt. Corey MacDonald at 603-610-7548. Anonymous tips can be placed through CrimeStoppers at 603-431-1199.
