N.H. Foliage Approaching Peak

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ― New Hampshire's forests are exploding with the brilliant colors of fall, and leaf peepers are crowding the state.

Next weekend, Columbus Day, is typically the highpoint of the short season, but colors already are reported at peak in some areas, and headed there in time for the holiday in others.

Tourism officials still expect crowds, but the economy may affect where they come from. Jayne O'Connor, president of White Mountains Attractions Association, says they expect visitors from near and far, but not in between. Specifically, she's looking for camera-toting visitors from the Northeast, as well as Canada and Europe, because the exchange rate is favorable. But high travel costs may keep visitors away from the Midwest or West Coast.

The state tourism office reports peak colors in the northern half of the state, near peak in the Monadnock Region and peak expected in the next week or 10 days in the Lake Sunapee Region and the Lakes Region.
