FEMA Denies Help For NH Families Hit By Tornado

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ― New Hampshire Governor John Lynch says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied his request to include assistance to individuals in the major disaster declaration relating to the July 24 tornado.

Lynch says he's disappointed, but that the state will continue to work with communities and various volunteer organizations to provide assistance to families.

Under the current federal disaster declaration, communities in Belknap, Carroll, Merrimack, Rockingham and Strafford counties impacted by tornado are eligible to receive financial assistance to help cover the costs of responding to the emergency and repairing public structures.

The original declaration did not include assistance for individuals. Last week, Lynch requested that FEMA officials reconsider that decision.
