Father, Daughter Killed In N.H. Apartment Fire
PITTSFIELD, N.H. (WBZ) ―
A father and daughter have died in a three-alarm fire at an apartment building in Pittsfield, N.H.
The fire happened at 36 Main Street around 5 a.m. on Monday, the
Union Leader reported.
Authorities said the father, who lived on the second floor, had managed to leave the building, then went back inside to get his daughter, who is disabled.
The man's son also tried to help, but could not get back into the house because of the intense flames.
Fire crews were at the burning building within minutes, the paper reports, but by that time, heavy flames and smoke were spewing out of the apartment.
Firefighters did not release the names of the victims, but neighbors identified them as 54-year-old Richard Johnston and 26-year-old Heidi Johnston, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.
Firefighters said everyone is accounted for; three of the four apartments were rented.
Firefighters from about 10 communities responded.
The fire caused a power outage at the nearby Pittsfield Middle High School. Authorities closed the school.
