School Roofs Threatened By Heavy Snow

Concord Schools To Be Closed Wednesday

CONCORD, N.H. (WBZ) ― Two schools were partially evacuated Tuesday and a third was completely cleared out as the weight of deep snow continues to be a problem in New Hampshire.

In Concord, officials decided to close school Wednesday due to concerns about ice, snow and rain on the roofs after Tuesday night's storms.

On Tuesday, students were kept from a section of the Dame Elementary School after custodians saw signs of potential problems in a section of the building with a flat roof. Crews with shovels and snow blowers cleared the snow as firefighters checked other rooftops in the city.

A part of the Rondlett Middle School in Concord was also shut down Tuesday morning for the same reasons.

Concord fire officials spent much of Monday checking on school roofs.  The district hired roofing companies to clear snow at a cost of about $25,000, officials said.

In Holderness, children were sent home early from the elementary school after a custodian noticed some fire sprinkler heads had dropped a couple of inches from their normal positions.

Principal William Van Bennekum said crews with shovels and snow blowers went to the roof and the sprinkler heads seemed to spring back.

He said they have been shoveling snow for the last three weeks.

There have been at least 10 roof collapses in Concord this winter.
