NH Tax Evader Gets 35 Years In Prison

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ― A New Hampshire woman has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for amassing an arsenal of weapons at her fortress-like home after she and her husband were convicted of tax evasion.

Elaine Brown was convicted with her husband in July of plotting to kill federal agents during a nine-month standoff at their Plainfield home.

Her lawyer had asked for a 30-year sentence, arguing that she is an exceptional woman who was motivated by firmly held convictions rather than anger or greed.

Prosecutors asked for at least 41 years.

The Browns, who insist the federal income tax is unconstitutional, holed up in their hilltop home in early 2007 after being sentenced to prison for tax evasion.

Ed Brown has yet to be sentenced on the weapons and conspiracy charges.
