Avalanche Danger Elevated In White Mountains

PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) ― The Forest Service is warning hikers, climbers and skiers that spring brings special hazards to Mount Washington.

Officials are warning of potential avalanches and other springtime hazards, including crevasses and falling ice.

Its Avalanche Center forecasts avalanche activity for two of the mountain's most popular areas, Tuckerman and Huntington ravines. Lead Snow Ranger Chris Joosen says they have seen large avalanches in areas that haven 't been hit in recent winters.

He says the potential for avalanches is elevated this winter around the White Mountains.

Joosen says they are possible in snow-covered slopes of more 25 degrees, even in areas with trees.
