Newton Approves Extra Money For New High School
NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ) ―
Officials in Newton have approved a plan to spend an extra $56 million to build Newton North High School, bringing the total cost of the project to $197.5 million.
In addition, Mayor David Cohen also promised he would not come back and ask for more money to pay for the school -- even if that means making changes to the building plans.
The new high school is the most expensive school project in Massachusetts history.
The board voted 17 to five in favor of the appropriation Tuesday night.
The current cost estimate is about 40 percent higher than the one given voters when they approved construction in January 2007.
