A Quick, Easy Way To Become An Organ Donor
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
It's getting a lot easier to register to become an organ donor.
You used to have to sign up, in person, at the
Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Now, you can register with the simple click of a mouse at the RMV web site or a brand new site calledĀ
donatelifenewengland.org.
Richard Luskin, President and CEO of the New England Organ Bank, said the new site allows many more people to become a donor.
"This is a way of making it easier to sign up between registrations or for people who don't have a driver's license or for people who forgot to do it the last time they were at the registry to renew their license. It's a way to reach out across New England and it will affect all six New England states."
All you need to do is fill in your name, your address, your birth date, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
"That allows us to verify that the person signing up is the person signing up. It's a safety feature," said Luskin.
Dr. David Greer, a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, told WBZ registering to become an organ donor is offering the gift of life.
"There are many patients waiting on the organ donor list, and dying on the list, who are not getting organs in time. The ability to save many lives by the donation of one patient is incredibly impactful."
Even though it's wonderful to want to become an organ donor, experts say you should feel comfortable with your decision and understand what's involved.
