High School Track Star Killed In Wenham Crash

WENHAM (WBZ) ― An 18-year-old recent graduate of Wenham High School was killed in a car accident Sunday night.

Gabe Pacione died when the BMW he and 18-year-old Marcus Hanna were driving in slammed into a tree on Grapevine Road, which is known by residents as being a dark and winding road that is notorious for accidents.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the BMW had slammed into a tree.

Pacione was taken to Beverly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Hanna, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was taken to the same hospital. The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

Friends told WBZ's Karen Anderson that Pacione and Hanna were heading home after a graduation party on Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester and they were only a few miles from Gabe's home when they crashed.

Pacione was the captain of the track team at Hamilton-Wenham High School and was named the Boston Globe All Scholastic Cross-Country Runner of the Year for Division 2 in both 2006 and 2007.

"He was one of those kids who when you saw him he lit up the room," said Pacione's friend, Jane Murdoch. "Everybody knew who Gabe was.  He was a mini celebrity in Hamilton."

Pacione was accepted to attend Dartmouth College this fall, where he had earned a spot on the school's Cross Country team.

"He was just an awesome kid.  No one ever said a bad thing about him," said friend Jake Cotter. "Everybody liked him.  He was one of those kids who would say 'hi' to anyone and anyone would feel fine saying 'hi' to him."

The cause of the accident is still not known and the crash is under investigation.

"It's scary to think we just graduated and he's gone," said friend Caroline Defelice.
