Volunteers Clean Up Trash In Mass. Parks, Beaches

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Volunteers from across Massachusetts helped pick up several tons of trash from more than 50 state parks on Saturday.

Saturday's second annual Park Serve Day helped prepare 57 state parks for the spring and summer recreation season.

Volunteers removed 17 tons of trash and planted hundreds of trees. They cleaned up beaches, trails, painted picnic tables and improved landscaping.

Some of the odd pieces of trash found included car engines, a refrigerator, a washing machine and house flooring.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick took part in the day's activities by helping out at the October Mountain State Forest in Lee.

Patrick said the event reaffirms the commitment and support for natural and recreational resources.
