2 More Mass. Towns Under Boil-Water Order

PEMBROKE (WBZ) ― A water boiling advisory has been issued in two more Massachusetts towns after E. coli bacteria was found in the public water supply.

Residents of Fire District 2, which covers South Hadley and parts of Granby, have been advised to boil tap water for at least one minute to kill bacteria and other organisms before using it, or use bottled water.

Water department superintendent William Selkirk says tests show that the contamination is not from his district's water source, but that it entered the system some other way, possibly through a water main break.

Chlorine is being added to the system.

A boil–water order is still in effect for Pembroke after three out of 34 samples tested positive for coliform.

There were no traces of E. coli in the samples but the boil order cannot be lifted until a minimum of three rounds of sample results in a row show no coliform in the Pembroke Water System, Public Works officials said.

Until the source of the bacteria is determined and all the tests come back clear, the boil-water order will remain in effect.

The next round of samples from Pembroke is expected to return Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
